چکیده

In debate over the truth or falsity of folk psychology (henceforth, FP, a notation which also will go proxy for 'folk psychological'), the most influential players tend to line up on the U.S. coasts: friends of FP, like Jerry Fodor and William Lycan, on the East; foes, like Paul Churchland, Patricia Churchland, and Stephen Stich until recently, on the W e s t . 1 There are important voices in other locales and periodic geographic shifts among the principals, but by and large gravity seems to pull east or west. 2 This is unfortunate, we believe, for the proper perspective lies in unexplored Southern states, and in a faith in FP that borders on the evangelical. It's time for gravitational pull to Dixie? It's time, in short, for Southern Fundamentalism.

Horgan on Sleeping Beauty

With the notable exception of David Lewis, most of those writing on the Sleeping Beauty problem have argued that 1/3 is the correct answer. Terence Horgan has provided the clearest account of why, contrary to Lewis, Beauty has evidence against the proposition that the coin comes up heads when she awakens on Monday. In this paper, I argue that Horgan’s proposal fails because it neglects importan...

How Superduper Does a Physicalist Supervenience Need to Be?

It has recently been made clear that the standard formulations of the supervenience relation – weak, global and strong, among others – are too programmatic to be the full answer to a physicalist’s prayers. All the standard formulations present the supervenience of one set of properties on another in terms of property correlations, without placing any constraints on the dependency relation eVect...

On the inequalities of Babuška-Aziz, Friedrichs and Horgan-Payne

The equivalence between the inequalities of Babuška–Aziz and Friedrichs for sufficiently smooth bounded domains in the plane has been shown by Horgan and Payne 30 years ago. We prove that this equivalence, and the equality between the associated constants, is true without any regularity condition on the domain. For the Horgan–Payne inequality, which is an upper bound of the Friedrichs constant ...

The End of Science: Facing the Limits of Knowledge in the Twilight of the Scientific Age

Four years ago John Horgan, then a senior staff writer for Scientific American, published in that journal “The Death of Proof”, a piece that claimed that “video proofs” were transforming mathematics. Among other things,“The Death of Proof” suggested that Wiles’s announced resolution of Fermat’s Last Theorem might be a “splendid anachronism”, one of the last great formal proofs. As it turns out,...
